English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students learn about the study and use of the English language in its various textual forms. These encompass spoken, written and visual texts through which meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected. Complexity increases as students progress through their schooling.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Extension 2
  • English Extension 1
  • English Advanced
  • English Standard
  • English Studies
  • English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
  • English Life Skills.

The English Faculty at Bankstown Girls' High School is an innovative faculty who is committed to providing quality learning experiences for all students. The English Faculty has a history of outstanding academic achievement in a variety of extra curricular activities. A strong tradition of debating has seen students from Years 8 through to 12 succeed at regional levels, whilst our participation in public speaking competitions has seen great success over the years. Drama has been an area that has seen quality achievements of late, where students have been selected to perform in theatres across the South West of Sydney. Technology is a growing focus in the English faculty, and all students experience a variety of digital media in their classrooms. Students engage in video editing, blogging and podcasting to name just a few.

The English classroom provides an environment that encourages every student to excel. Students are challenged by the ideas in texts and are encouraged express their own views in a variety of text types. The English faculty sets high expectations for students and thoroughly prepares all students for the challenges of the classroom and beyond.
