English as an Additional Language or Dialect

Bankstown Girls High School provides programs and resources that enable students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) to develop their English language and literacy skills. Learning English is essential for success at school and for further education, training and employment for students who speak a language other than English as their first language.

The EAL/D specialist teacher assists EAL/D students to develop their English Language skills and improve language competence across the curriculum.

EAL/D students at Bankstown Girls High School are supported in the following ways:

  • Enrolment: Identification and Orientation program designed to target EAL/D students' area of need in order for support to be allocated.
  • Collaborative EAL/D teaching mode: involves EAL/D teachers and classroom teachers sharing responsibility for planning, programming, teaching, assessment and evaluation. This is to ensure that the content is made accessible to EAL/D students by differentiating the curriculum and modifying the programs and/or resources.
  • Direct EAL/D teaching modes- withdrawal support: offered to students who require more intensive EAL/D support.
  • Cultural and linguistic teaching strategies are used by all classroom teachers to provide support to EAL/D learners to participate in classroom activities. These strategies may include encouraging the use of first language, using scaffolds and differentiating teaching, learning and assessment.
