Bankstown Girls High School Library

The Library at Bankstown Girls High School is the learning heart of our school. It is a hub of activity involving students, and staff members as well as providing an inviting space for guests to present their work to us as a school community. In this environment we hope to produce informed, inquiring, confident and caring individuals.

The Library provides the girls with a harmonious, safe and welcoming environment. Within this environment they are able to relax with their peers, complete assessment tasks, access technology or play table games during recess and lunch breaks.

The library also hosts inter school debates, guest speakers – writers, slam poets, Bell Shakespeare company, Federal & State politicians.

The Library is a well-resourced learning centre that aims to support the core curriculum through an extensive and up-to-date collection of books and an eBook platform, and access to on-line resources via Oliver Library. Through offering a wide choice of current young adult fiction, the library aims to support reading engagement and help our girls to develop their Reader Identity. Reading for enjoyment is allocated time in every school day at BGHS as well as nurturing our girls to become life-long readers. Our aim is to help develop an inquiring mind and to equip students with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of their future learning needs.

The Library is also host to the Year 12 Study Skills program, currently run by Mrs Denise Voros. This program is designed to assist Year 12 to learn about themselves as a Learner and maximise their potential to excel in their final year of secondary schooling. Assistance is provided in time management, note taking, organisation of study notes, drafting assessment tasks, preparing for tertiary education etc. This personalised service is designed to assist our Year 12 students to be the best they can be... Semper Optime (Always the best).

Our library also caters for a variety of types of classroom learning and provides learning spaces to enable different learning arrangements, including large moveable tables for collaborative work, small tables for group work, comfortable lounge chairs where discussions can take place and the technology zone where information fluency can be supported. There's also a video editing corner provided for collaborative digital artefact production. Engaging students in their learning is supported by a welcoming space that is comfortable and inviting. This is also an ideal venue for presentations to be delivered by a range of guest speakers from external agencies.

The Library provides learning support and printing facilities from before school every day. There is also a Monday afternoon support group for our international students, run by the staff of our EAL/D faculty.

The library is a gateway to thousands of different worlds.
