Another initiative is our Problem Solving unit conducted by Mrs Rounis in Year 7 and 8. Students are taught a variety of problem solving strategies to assist them in the Working Mathematically strand of Mathematics. These strategies are transferable to all Key Learning Areas and consolidate the skills taught in the Year 7 Orientation program and better equip students for external examinations in Year 9 and 10. The program commenced in Term 2 and will continue as part of the delivery of Mathematics in 2011.
The program so far is best described by Raneem Safadi in Year 8.
Think about Bankstown Girls High School for a minute ....... how many Mrs Rounis' are there in the school? ........ That's right, only one. If you need help with your problem solving Mrs Rounis is the answer! With the wave of her magic ruler she can solve any of the battles ahead.
Year 8 are one of the first grades at this high school to have entered a worthwhile problem solving workshop. Our class was very excited to start this program and work with the new types of equipment.
We started off by learning the basics of solving a problem. Instead of writing in work books and looking through thick textbooks, Mrs Rounis took it to another level, and everybody enjoyed using games and other mathematical activities to learn. Mrs Rounis started us off with a challenging quiz and then got down to business with a worksheet that was very interesting.
So don't forget-if you get stuck with any maths problems, go to the Maths staffroom and she will always be there to help (and will be more than happy to assist you).
Here is a little poem to express our appreciation for this amazing Maths teacher:
Mrs Rounis is so fun
She is always there just like the sun
She solves your questions
And always has suggestions
Without her we can't bare
Mrs Rounis always cares
So that she knows she's taught us well, we will show it in our tests
That's why she is the best!
