"I'm going to sew a bag? I've never sewn anything in my life!".
This was the general sentiment from 8SOP3 TAS who, on beginning their Sew Sustainable unit of work, were absolutely convinced that they couldn't (and wouldn't) pull any sewing out of the bag. Fast forward to Term 4, and 8SOP3 have not only sewn their own tote bags, but also developed the skills that allowed them to decorate their bags in innovative and creative ways.
After studying the ways in which sustainable textiles products can be made, students designed and produced their tote bags with sustainable practice in mind, using unbleached (eco-friendly) calico, dyes, recycled fabric offcuts and hand-sewing techniques.
Students were particularly pleased with their work, but were most proud of the sewing skills they had developed. And who knows, maybe Australia's next Project Runway winner is in our classrooms right now!
